TYPE I

“E” INSIDE THE “D” CHARACTER IN

 “ ISLA DE CUBA”

TYPE II

DENORMAL

Due to the slow way the mail service was working at the beginning of the XIX century the directors of the mail system began to work ways to improve the service. Up to that moment the received mail was marked with a cancellation that only contained the city or town of origin of the envelope. The authority concluded that they will add the DATE of the day it  was received and the place of origin. Also was required that the back of the envelope be stamped  with the date of received and the post office who received it.

This new system of dated cancellations was adopted and approved by the Royal Order on 8 May 1842, the General Director of Postal Services in Spain was Don Juan Baeza as it is understood, the new system was given the name of "BAEZA". These "dated cancellations" were imposed to the 29 Spanish provinces and its 3 colonies Cuba, Puerto Rico and Phillipines. Each province was adjudicated a zone number from 1 to 31 in the case of the Cuba and Puerto Rico colonies, they received the same number 30, Phillipines was adjudicated number 31.

These new postal marks were given double circles with the name of the city in the upper end and the province in lower part, in both side are the number assigned to each possession in the case of Cuba was #30 and in the center the date: day, month and year.

The markers assigned to Cuba we find two types, TYPE I, SHOWING IN THE CENTER "ISLA DE CUBA"is to observe that the preposition   "DE" the "E" is inside the character "D". In type II the preposition "DE" is in a normal way as seen at the beginning of this paragraph.

Type I cancellations were the first received in Cuba, the following cities were the only ones detected: Habana, Matanzas, Puerto Príncipe, Santiago and Trinidad. These same cities received the II type, just as the other Cuban towns.

Always we should notice that the Type I of Santiago (de Cuba) was used in Santiago de las Vegas. In type II cancellation, two examples are to be noted: "S.TIAGO DE CUBA", and SGO. DE CUBA and these were the 4 different types of cancellations created for these cities.

Differents ink colors was used according with the ink available in each Post Office at that time.
